North Shore Drive.
The North Shore Drive of Lake Superior in Minnesota is one of my favorite places to visit and photograph. These two views of Lake Superior were taken from almost the same place. Many overlooks like this are only a short walk from the highway.
To partly quote Wikipedia “The North Shore Scenic Drive is an All-American Road scenic byway designated route that follows … State Highway 61 … from the city of Duluth, Minnesota to the Canadian border near Grand Portage. The route stays close to the rocky North Shore of Lake Superior, offering spectacular vistas of the lake to the southeast as it skirts along the foothills of the Sawtooth Range to the northwest.” It is about 149 miles long.
Split Rock Lighthouse
Split Rock is an iconic, an often photographed attraction along the drive. This image is a composite of clouds and texture, with a lighting effect added in Photoshop.
There are several State Parks and a wonderful trail system that parallel Lake Superior. Many inland lakes and rivers are nearby and a host of beautiful, scenic overlooks beckon along the drive. One of my special memories is when I was lured to a particular lake “just a bit off the beaten path”, that was supposedly sporting some beautiful Fall colors. The road changed from tar, to gravel, to a two rut track which finally ended at our destination. I was doubtful along the way, but you had to be a believer and keep going to enjoy this private viewing of nature’s best… it’s called Bogus Lake!
The Superior Hiking Trail
This image of Stemless Lady’s Slippers and Bunchberries was taken while on Superior Hiking Trail System and has been modified in Photoshop with layers of the Fractalius plug-in and the Oil Paint filter blended at various opacities.
Don’t forget to bring your hiking boots and try out the many, well-maintained trails. Here you will find some spectacular scenes and fauna that only the hiker gets a chance to experience.
Waterfalls, wildflowers, lake views and Fall colors are just some of the photographic possibilities along the North Shore. Cities like Duluth, Two Harbors and Grand Marais schedule many special events that showcase their lake heritage and bring you up close to ocean going ships, large harbors and special bridges.
